Quick answer

How can I check my IELTS level before I start preparing?

This short diagnostic gives you one Reading passage with six questions and one Writing Task 2 prompt. It is not a full mock test and will not give you a band score. It shows which question types trip you up and whether your essay structure works, so you know what to study first.

1How to take this diagnostic

Set a timer for 10 minutes for the reading questions. Do not use a dictionary. Then check your answers and note the type of every mistake. After that, give yourself 40 minutes for the essay below.

2Writing Task 2 prompt

Some people believe that schools should teach practical skills such as cooking and managing money, while others think academic subjects are more important. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Write at least 250 words.

When you finish, check it against the Task 2 structure: does the introduction state your view, does each body paragraph have one main idea with an example, and does the conclusion match the introduction?

3What to do with your results

  • Most errors on True, False, Not Given: start with that lesson.
  • Ran out of time: practise skimming each paragraph for its main idea first.
  • Essay under 250 words or without a clear opinion: work through the Task 2 lesson before anything else.

Passage

In 2019 the city of Pune introduced a scheme that allowed residents to rent bicycles from stations across the city using a mobile app. In its first year, the scheme recorded more than two million rides, most of them under three kilometres. City officials had expected the bicycles to be used mainly by commuters, but a survey found that students made up the largest group of users. The scheme faced difficulties in its second year, when a large number of bicycles were damaged or stolen, and the operator reduced the number of stations. Supporters argue that the scheme still proved there was demand for cycling, and that better-protected stations would solve most of the problems.
