Who needs the dMAT?
The dMAT (digital Master Test) is an aptitude test introduced by g.a.s.t. on 29 June 2026 and built into the APS India process. It is not a general requirement for studying in Germany — it applies only where all four of the following are true at once. If even one is false, you do not need to sit it.
All four must be true
- You are applying for a Master’s degree in Germany
- Your intake is Summer 2027 or later
- Your bachelor’s is in engineering (incl. CS/IT), commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management
- Your APS registration was completed on or after 29 June 2026
Officially exempt
- Bachelor’s and PhD applicants
- Winter 2026/27 intake or earlier
- APS registration completed before 29 June 2026
- Exchange, double-degree or university-partnership programmes

Common questions
Do I need to take the dMAT?
You need the dMAT if all four of these are true: you are applying for a Master’s degree in Germany, for the Summer 2027 intake or later, with a bachelor’s in engineering (including CS/IT), commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management, and your APS registration was completed on or after 29 June 2026. If any one of them is false, the dMAT does not apply to you.
Who is exempt from the dMAT?
Bachelor’s and PhD applicants are exempt. So is anyone targeting the Winter 2026/27 intake or earlier, anyone whose APS registration was completed before 29 June 2026, and students on exchange, double-degree or university-partnership programmes.
I already registered with APS. Do I still need the dMAT?
If your APS registration and documentation were completed before 29 June 2026 — the date g.a.s.t. announced the dMAT — you are exempt. Registrations completed on or after that date fall under the new requirement. Keep your APS confirmation, since the date on it is what decides this.
My degree is interdisciplinary. Does the dMAT apply?
Degrees such as Business Analytics, Data Science, Industrial Engineering or FinTech can fall on either side of the affected-fields list depending on how your university classifies them. The checker cannot settle these cases — verify your specific programme against the official APS India affected-fields list before deciding to skip the exam.
