We train for a scoring engine, not an examiner

PTE is scored by AI, with a human check of content on seven task types. That changes what good speaking means. A steady pace, clear word endings and no long pauses earn more than an expressive answer with hesitations. Self-correcting, which sounds natural to a person, costs oral fluency marks here.

So speaking practice in class is recorded and played back, with attention to microphone distance and volume. You hear where a pause broke a phrase, where a word ending disappeared, and where you went back to fix a word. The fix is drilled until it is automatic.

Tasks that score two skills come first

Repeat Sentence and Retell Lecture score listening and speaking. Summarize Written Text scores reading and writing. Write from Dictation, Summarize Spoken Text and the listening fill in the blanks score listening and writing. Because each of these moves two skill scores at once, they get daily time from the first week.

Write from Dictation is close to a pure memory and spelling drill: hear a sentence once, hold it as meaning chunks, type it, check plurals and articles. A few minutes of it every class adds up quickly.

Partial credit means attempting everything

Most PTE tasks give partial credit. A fluent repetition of 80% of a sentence beats silence, and a filled gap may score where an empty one cannot. We train students out of the habit of stopping when unsure.

The exceptions get their own rule. Multiple choice with multiple answers and Highlight Incorrect Words take points away for wrong choices, so there the habit we build is the opposite: choose only what you can prove.

Structures for the August 2025 tasks, not memorised scripts

Describe Image, Retell Lecture, the two summaries, the essay and the two speaking tasks added in August 2025, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation, all get a structure you can fill in any prompt. Memorised scripts that ignore the prompt now earn little, because a human checks content on those tasks. In class, every structure is practised on new prompts until the words come from the prompt, not from memory.

Typing, timing and the two-hour run

Writing tasks are typed, against word limits that score zero outside them: 5 to 75 words in one sentence for Summarize Written Text, 200 to 300 for the essay. Students practise with a live word count and a clock. Later in the month, full timed runs build the stamina for a test of about two hours with no scheduled break.
