dMAT for commerce and business graduates

What does the dMAT ask of commerce, finance and business graduates?

Commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business and management graduates applying for a German Master’s from Summer 2027 must sit the dMAT. There is no commerce syllabus: they take the same Core Module and General Academic Module as every other APS India applicant, with no accounting or finance content.

The requirement follows your bachelor’s, not your Master’s

g.a.s.t. names commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business and management alongside engineering as the disciplines whose applicants must sit the dMAT. What puts you in scope is the subject of your bachelor’s degree together with a Summer 2027 or later intake through APS India.

So a commerce graduate applying for a data-science Master’s is in scope, and an applicant from a discipline outside the list is not — whatever the Master’s programme is.

No accounting, no finance, no case studies

None of the four parts of the paper contains commerce content. The Core Module is Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares — pattern and deduction items with no subject attached. The General Academic Module is single-choice questions on short academic scenarios, and every APS India applicant sits that general version rather than a business-specific one.

If you were expecting something like the quantitative and verbal sections of a management entrance test, this is a different exam. There are no reading-comprehension passages of the CAT or GMAT kind, no data-sufficiency items, and no essay.

What actually transfers from a commerce degree

Reading a table and saying precisely what it shows — and refusing to say more than it shows — is the single most useful habit for the General Academic Module, and it is one a commerce or economics degree builds. Its data items reward exactly that discipline: describe the trend the numbers make, not the trend you expect.

The Core Module transfers nothing from any degree, which is why it is worth the practice time. Mathematical Equations is arithmetic under a clock with no calculator, and the marks go to whoever spots the shortcut rather than solving the system line by line.
