What do I need to get into a master’s in Ireland?

A relevant bachelor’s degree with good marks, an English test result or an accepted alternative, a statement of purpose, references and your transcripts. Each university sets its own minimum percentage and its own rules on backlogs, and many look for 60% or above (a 2.1 equivalent); confirm per program. Explain any study gap with evidence.

Percentage required

What percentage do you need?

There is no single national cut-off. Many master’s programmes look for 60% or above (a 2.1 equivalent), and competitive courses at the top public universities often ask for more. Private colleges can be more flexible. Confirm the minimum for your exact course on its official page.

Universities convert Indian percentages or CGPA into the Irish honours classes (First, 2:1, 2:2), so a strong final-year record and a relevant degree matter as much as the overall figure.

Backlogs

Are backlogs accepted?

Policies vary by institution. Many universities accept a limited number of cleared backlogs and look at your final result; some competitive courses are stricter. Always declare backlogs honestly and send the transcripts that show them cleared.

Confirm the backlog policy on the official page of each course before you apply, and ask your counsellor which colleges suit your record.

Study gap

Is a study gap a problem?

A gap is not a bar on its own. What matters is a clear, honest explanation with evidence: work experience letters, salary slips, course certificates or medical records.

The visa office reads the same story. An unexplained gap is a common reason for refusal, alongside weak funds evidence for the €10,000 living funds. Keep your gap explanation consistent across your SOP, CV and visa letter.
