Why the three get confused
The dMAT and TestAS come from the same body — g.a.s.t., which also runs TestDaF — and both are aptitude tests for studying in Germany. That shared origin is most of the confusion. They apply at different levels: TestAS to undergraduate admission, the dMAT to Master’s applicants going through APS India.
The GRE has nothing to do with either. It is an ETS test that individual universities and programmes may ask for on their own terms, and no German requirement replaces it or is replaced by it.
Sitting one does not excuse you from another
A GRE score does not exempt you from the dMAT, and neither does a TestAS certificate. They answer to different requirements: the dMAT is part of APS documentation, while a GRE requirement comes from the programme you are applying to. If both apply to you, both have to be done.
The exemptions that do exist for the dMAT are about who you are and when you apply — bachelor’s and PhD applicants, the Winter 2026/27 intake and earlier, an APS completed before 29 June 2026, and exchange or partnership programmes — not about other tests you have taken.
What the dMAT is scored out of, and why comparisons mislead
The dMAT is scored 0–200 per module with a mean of 100, plus a percentile against everyone who sat the same date. That is not comparable to a GRE score, and a strong GRE tells a university nothing about your dMAT percentile.
Nobody has sat the dMAT yet — the first sitting is 26 September 2026 — so there is no cohort, no published cut-off and no historical distribution. Any page telling you what a "good dMAT score" is, or converting a GRE score into one, is inventing it.
