dMAT exam pattern

What is the dMAT exam pattern?

The dMAT runs three and a half hours. A 90-minute Core Module covers Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares — 56 items in total. After a 30-minute break comes the 90-minute General Academic Module. Every question is single-choice, there is no calculator, and you may not take notes.

What each Core subtest asks

The Core Module tests reasoning rather than recalled theory. The three subtests are unrelated to each other and each has its own clock.

  • Figure Sequences — a figure shifts position, colour or orientation across a row of matrices by a fixed rule. You work out the rule and pick the matrix that comes next.
  • Mathematical Equations — small systems where letters stand for whole numbers with exactly one solution. This rewards fast substitution, not advanced algebra.
  • Latin Squares — a partly filled 5×5 grid where each letter A–E appears once per row and once per column. You deduce what belongs in the marked cell.

The General Academic Module

Every APS India applicant sits the General Academic Module rather than a field-specific one. It presents a short academic scenario — often with a table, figure or passage — followed by single-choice questions.

g.a.s.t. publishes the Core Module’s 56 items but not the General Academic Module’s count, so any total you see quoted for the full paper is a guess.

Conditions on the day

The exam is computer-based, in English, at a test centre. No calculator is permitted and you may not take notes during the exam — which matters more than it sounds for Latin Squares, where most people’s instinct is to sketch the grid.

AdmitVerse is not affiliated with g.a.s.t. or APS India. Registration happens only at d-mat.de. Facts on this page were last checked against g.a.s.t. and APS India on 15 September 2026; where anything here conflicts with them, they are authoritative.
